NEWS – Professor Atilla Bıyıkoğlu, the 9th Term President of Turkish Society of Thermal Sciences and Technology, provided detailed information about the establishment, targets and the activities of the society.

  • Would you give a brief biographical sketch of your life?

I was born in Ankara in 1967. I have a son and a daughter. I completed my primary and secondary education in Ankara Sarar Primary School in Ankara Bahçelievler Deneme High School. I was graduated from the Mechanical Engineering Department of Gazi University (GU) in 1989. I was taken the degree of Master of Science from Mechanical Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1992 and the degree of Philosophy of Doctor from Mechanical Engineering Department of Gazi University in 1998. As a research assistant with Gazi University Eng. Faculty, Mechanical Eng. Department I stepped into academic life. I had no other experience than the university.

  • How was initiated to establish the society? Could you please give some information about the establishment process? Who first proposed the idea of establishing an association?

In Autumn 1974, during the workshop about “Thermodynamics Education” in Boğaziçi University, the first idea of establishing a society of thermal science and technology has been raised in order to develop research and applications related to the thermal science across Turkey. A small group, the majority of which is a faculty member of the Middle East Technical University (METU) and the Istanbul Technical University (ITU), determined the outline of the association’s charter and established the “Thermal Sciences and Technology Association” at METU Mechanical Engineering Department at the beginning of 1976.

  • You have selected as a 9th Term President of TIBTD in 2018. What was your first experience as a President of TIBTD and where did it lead?

My first activity as the chairman of the association has been the establishment of member communications and the identification of active members and this process is still going on. The member information has been updated and entered into the DERBIS system.

  •  Describe the industry at that time. What were the challenges that you and your colleagues were facing?

2018 was a period of economic turmoil after the currency crisis. 2019 seems to be a year when the effects of the economic crisis are felt more and more. In many industries, there is a recession in the domestic market. Apart from the firms that are oriented to export, some of them started to decrease their capacity and ended up their activities. In this environment, there are difficulties in finding sponsors for Congress. However, the congress fees were kept to a minimum without profit.

  • How and when did you get started in TIBTD?

I registered to the society in 1994 with a member number of 795. On 26.11.2004, I entered the Board of Directors with the proposal of Prof. Zühtü Uysal. I have been active in the board of directors of the association for 14 years from 2004 till 2018. I was worked as a treasurer for 12 years since 05.12.2006.

  • Do you have any participation in any other form of Societies?

I have a membership to the following institutions; MMO(1990), TTMD (2019), ASME(1994-2004), ASHRAE (2013)

  • What was your target at the beginning years of TIBTD?

To serve the development of the society and to take an active role.

  • Which projects did you completed related to Thermal Sciences and Technology and Are there any project planned for future related to thermal sciences?

The English interface of the Association’s web page,, has been completed and activated, and All journals published since 1977 have been uploaded to the web page in the electronic form. The 22nd Congress of Thermal Sciences and Technology to be held in Kocaeli in 2019 is being prepared. The Congress, which has been held nationally so far, has gained international qualification. To be distributed free of charge to members, the Association badge is designed and repressed. In addition, an association member ID card is designed and printed and planned to be distributed free of charge to members during the Congress. For the future, it is planned to increase the number of members of the association and to appoint a faculty member representing the association in each university. An attempt will be made to publish and distribute the Journal of Thermal Sciences and Technology. In addition, the Doi number will be taken for each article published in the journal. In order to make the Association more recognizable in both domestic and foreign universities and industrial communities, the activities will be carried out. In this context, an introductory film of the association is planned to be prepared. Interviews with people who have served the association will be carried out and used in the promotional film. In addition, one of the articles published in TIBTD journal will be selected and a 1-minute promotional film will be prepared. It is thought that this film will contribute to the promotion of the journal in the national and international field, academia and industry and raise awareness. It is planned to increase the efficiency of the Association in the international community by including international organizations. In addition, initiatives will be taken to participate in national and international projects as partners and/or executives on the basis of associations.

  • What is your opinion about Turkish thermal science and technology sector and its future?

Turkey, in the thermal science and technology sector worldwide, has renowned academics and engineers. For example, some of the world famous Turkish academics; Sadık Kakaç, Yaman Yener, Yunus Çengel, Vedat Arpacı, Necati Özışık, et al. The scope of thermal science and technology includes the HVAC-R sector. The HVAC-R sector has completed its structuring for non-governmental organizations. To give examples of sectoral associations; TTMD, DOSİDER, İZODER, BACADER, İSKİD, İSEDA, ESSİAD, GÜNDER, KBSB, SOSİAD, MTMD. The trade volume of the HVAC-R sector was 9.2 billion USD as of 2017. Exports amounted to 3.9 billion, while imports amounted to 5.3 billion USD. Turkey trade volume share of 2.3% is in the range of HVAC-R trade. Considering that the 2023 export target of the air-conditioning sector is 25 Billion USD, it can be informed about the development potential of the sector.

  • How about thermal science related courses offered in universities in Turkey Is it enough? What can be done to diversify courses related to thermal science and to increase students’ interest in thermal science and technology sector?

In Turkey, the lessons being given in the universities related to thermal sciences, when generally considered, can be said to be sufficient. However, I believe that the developments in science are slow to be reflected in the textbooks and lecture notes of the lecturers. Although the theoretical training is good, due to the lack of laboratory and experimental equipment, I think the student is not given enough information about the application.

  • The Turkish Society of Thermal Sciences and Technology (TIBTD) was founded in 1976 with the purpose of developing thermal science and technology in Turkey. You took over the presidency of the association on 2018 as a 9th Term President of the TIBTD. What are the projects that you aim to achieve for the development of thermal science and technology in the period you are president?

I have four basic goals that I aim to achieve as the chairman of the association. My primary goal as president of the association is to make all the academics, engineers and interested researchers in Turkey working in the field of thermal sciences and technology be a member of the society. My second goal is to carry out activities that will increase the impact factor of the Journal of Turkish Thermal Sciences and Technology, which is scanned by the science citation index expanded. My third goal is to make the Congress of Thermal Science and Technology, organized every two years, to become a more known and respected event in the national and international arena. My fourth target is to organize common activities focusing on the development of science together with the organizations working in the field of thermal science and technology in Turkey and abroad. The first and third objective projects have been initiated. I plan to launch projects when the time comes to reach other goals.

  • What has TIBTD meant to you personally?

It is a scientific association established by academics who are willing to develop and spread the scientific activities in the field of thermal science and technology in Turkey. TIBTD, from my perspective, is a meeting point for scholars and the common denominator in Turkey. It is possible to reach many scientists who are famous in their field through our association. I believe that our country needs these and similar formations that bring the academic community together. Therefore, I think that every citizen interested in the science of heat should stand by this association.

  • What advice would you give to a young person entering the thermal science field?

I recommend that young scientists keep a close eye on international developments, participate regularly in congresses held at home and abroad, not to lose their hopes and remain open to criticism every time.

  • What do you think about the future and current status of TIBTD? What are your suggestions regarding the future of the association?

The Association has had 8 presidencies since its establishment. If the presidency periods are listed; Yalçın Gögüş (1976-1979), Sadık Kakaç (1979-1980), Orhan Yeşin (1980-1981), Nuri Saryal (1981-1993), Yalçın Göğüş (1993-1994), Ercan Ataer (1994-2000), Bekir Zühtü Uysal (2000-2006), Haşmet Türkoğlu (2006-2018). As a result of reviewing the available publications, I realized that the association was more active in its early years and more engaged with the industry. In the following years, it is understood that the development in terms of the journal is much faster and positive. When the publications in the first years of establishment of the Association are examined, it is observed that the number of articles is limited to 3 or 4, news from the sectoral firms, news of the association, developments related to thermal science and technology in the world, congresses, and similar activities have been announced. In addition, there are quite a lot of advertisements in the interior of the journal. It is observed that this structure of the magazine lasted until the period when Bekir Zühtü Uysal was chaired and that the journal became more scientific with the efforts and direction of Zühtü Uysal and no advertising was received in the journal. As a result of these efforts, the magazine started to be scanned by Science Citation Index Expended in the period of Haşmet Türkoğlu. The management of the association was carried out at METU from 1976 to 1993. After 1994, with the presidency of Ercan Ataer, the administration was transferred to Gazi University. When the profiles of the members of the Board of Directors of the Association are examined, it is observed that during the period of Nuri Saryal, people from the industry also participated in the board of directors; Some famous names, for example, Celal Okutan, Uzeyir Garih. and a few other names. Apart from those mentioned names, all boards are composed of academicians.

  • Evaluated in terms of duties and responsibilities, how should be the relationships with TIBTD and the relevant other forms of societies, and how can it be improved? Is it possible to realize common projects between the institutions?

The phrase. “Let’s overcome the borders and broaden our horizon”, which I have identified as the theme of the President, was not randomly selected. This includes the development of relations between institutions and the promotion of joint works. In this statement, with the “institutions”, both domestic and foreign associations, federations and so on. structures are meant. As president, I intend to involve national and international projects in the association mission to contribute to the science of heat. For this purpose, it is planned to communicate with similar structures and act with a common mind.

  • Any other comments you would like to make?

I know that it is not easy to achieve the above-mentioned goals. In order to achieve these goals, I plan to establish commissions on the board of the association. In addition, I am planning to establish the Association Secretariat to facilitate the focus of scientific activities as association management.
